Deciding where to go for your Study Abroad Program is a huge decision, and is one that really will change your life! Not only is it an opportunity for you to get an international perspective on your studies, you’ll also learn about a different culture, history and way of life. Wales is a great place to spend this precious time in your educational career.

The Study Abroad program will, of course, provide you with sound academic knowledge, but it is also structured to enable you to enjoy the rich diversity of cultural and social experiences available to you in Wales and at Trinity University College.

Introduction

International students - Campus

Trinity’s Study Abroad Programme began in 1976 and since then, the University has welcomed over 1,200 American students to the campus from over 40 colleges and universities in the USA either on study abroad or for full-time undergraduate study. In addition many American students have also taken advantage of their stay in Wales to travel around other countries in Europe, including, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy and Spain.

Accommodation and meals

Students rock climgingAll Study Abroad students live on campus in single study bedrooms with shared bathroom. The University’s Merlin restaurant offers a choice of hot meals, salads, snacks and sandwiches throughout the day where students may use their meal-scheme cards. There are also kitchen facilities to make light snacks or breakfast located within the International Lounge.

Academic Program

You may choose from a variety of courses at the University. At the beginning of the program, Trinity’s professors will present each of the courses to you, so that you can decide which ones appeal to you most. Once you have chosen between 12-17 hours of classes, the International Office will fax the information with the syllabi to your home institution. Upon completion of the Study Abroad Program, you and your institution will be given a transcript.

Most Trinity courses are three credit hours. Here are some of the courses on offer and all are available at undergraduate level or as part of a study abroad programme:

Acting

BA Acting is an innovative and exciting undergraduate programme designed for those students with aspirations towards a career in the performance industry. The degree carefully balances vocational actor training with contextual study and the creative exploration of performance theory. BA Acting students will follow an intensive programme of practical study which blends the acquisition of performance skills with performance methodology and contextual studies. The first year concent rates on the student’s development as a performer, with modules in voice, movement and dance, acting and devising, whilst the second year tests these skills in a variety of theatrical genres and contexts. The final year is entirely production based with a series of public productions culminating in a final performance project and showcase.

Advertising

A continual presence in our everyday lives, advertising is one of the most significant artistic and communicative modes of the modern age. Perhaps the creative medium of the late 20th Century, those whose early work was in the advertising business include Salman Rushdie and Ridley Scott. With new developments in media communications, opportunities to play a part in the creative process of advertising are increasing at a tremendous rate. The Advertising degree at Trinity has been specifically designed for you to make the most of these opportunities. You will undertake practical and academic work in an exploration of advertising as a creative and cultural phenomenon. During the course of your study, you will develop strategies, ideas and campaigns across the variety of advertising media - press, poster, cinema, television, radio and the internet. You will also gain a thorough awareness of the political contexts and ethical dilemmas of advertising in a global marketplace. Throughout your three years, you will develop the ability to understand the relationships between word, image, sound and world, constructing a wide ranging portfolio of creative work to present to the industry.

Business Information Technology

This challenging course provides an in-depth understanding of information systems, IT and contemporary management practices. You will develop a wide range of practical skills through lectures, workshops, group work, industrial visits and project work. Information Technology, Business and Management are highly valued disciplines in both the public and private sectors. This degree will provide you with a portfolio of desirable knowledge and skills relevant to your future career. The Conference and Placement module is an opportunity for you to apply your theoretical knowledge to real workplace situations.

Business and Management

This course is an ideal insight into the fast-moving world of business today. It has been designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed within the public or the private sector. The BA Business and Management is an up-to-date and broad ranging course. In addition to offering the main traditional topic areas of business and management, such as marketing, human resource management and finance, the course features fresh, modern and contemporary issues such as corporate social responsibility.

Christianity & Community Studies

The course is for anyone with an interest in the interface of Christianity and community issues. It aims to provide students with key transferable skills for work with a variety of community groups, young people, adults, particular congregations or agencies in the community. The course, therefore, aims to give you the opportunity to explore community issues from a variety of perspectives and will provide a good basis for youth, community, or pastoral work. Christianity and Community Studies will help you to understand and appreciate the interaction of religion, culture and community. Subjectspecific knowledge and understanding, included in attractive and innovative modules, will therefore be coupled with the practical and transferable skills necessary for employment. In order to achieve this, there are ample opportunities for work placements and study visits. Various teaching methods are used within the School of Theology and Religious Studies, eg lectures, discussion groups, debates, internet-study lessons and seminar presentations. Such innovative methods employ the use of soundsystems, television, video, e-learning, DVD, and Powerpoint.

Community Development

The need for highly qualified Community Development workers has increased in recent years through its recognition as a professional area that can influence sustainable regional development and the regeneration of communities. Community Development has an increasing presence in policy making and strategic planning in the UK and as such there is a significant amount of employment opportunities.Working within the field of community development requires specific skills in terms of project management, participatory techniques, funding acquisition, partnership working and also requires an understanding of the nature of regeneration, local economic development and sustainability. The community development programme at Trinity provides a vocational course set within an academic context in which students develop skills and knowledge directly applicable to the workplace and gain an understanding of theoretical issues.

Computing

The BSc Computing programme has been designed to provide students with an understanding of a wide range of contemporary subjects in the area of Computing. You will develop an extensive range of practical skills in the areas of Computing, Information Systems and Information Technology. A wide variety of experiences is provided via workshops, group work, industrial visits and project work.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing is an exciting and challenging degree that will enable you to develop your skills as a writer. The course will nurture your creative talent across a range of different forms - including short stories, screenplays, poetry, drama and novels - and will give you the opportunity to pursue your interests in a number of genres such as the gothic, the thriller/crime, the satiric and the romantic. Alongside the form and genre options, you will take modules in research and archiving, following which you will create a major piece of work which may lead to publication. Throughout your three years you will have regular contact with, and support from, a range of different writers, supported by other internationally renowned poets, playwrights, script writers and novelists. Weekly workshop sessions will be held within which you will be encouraged to discuss your work with your community of fellow writers, and during the course of your studies, you will receive input on how best to prepare your work for the market place. Alongside this one-to-one tuition, you will also take courses on writing for the workplace, including sessions on reviewing, editing and writing to brief.

Early Years Education

Early Years Education is recognised as an area with its own specialist educational requirements. A rigorously trained, well informed, knowledgeable, skilled and confident early years education workforce is crucial to high quality in all services for young children. This course is Trinity’s response to this need for a graduate level workforce in all areas of early years services. The course will take an holistic approach to young children’s learning processes. As students, you will take an in-depth look at child development, both theory and practice, both historic and up-to-date. You will, for example, consider exciting advances in neuro-scientific research and its implications for public policy and quality provision. You will study aspects of the history of childhood, families through time, the idea of play, and child health. You will also study the cultural concept of childhood, early literacy, literature for children, and gender and childhood, and will have the opportunities to visit a range of settings. In the third year you will undertake a specialist project and have related placement experience.

Education Studies

Our interpretation of education is widely based and is reflected in the range of modular choices available to student s. We are not concerned solely with schools and children, but with providing a portfolio of knowledge and experiencetocomplement a range of future careers. The School of Education Studies and Social Inclusion provides students with the opportunity to engage in a number of subject areas to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world. For example, modules include the history of education, as well as contemporary and international contexts, while psychology modules provide an overview of the theoretical perspectives that have had a huge impact on education, language acquisition, learning, intelligence, creativity, child and adolescent development, as well as attitudes and behaviour. In the second and third years the programme also offers placement opportunities where students may observe and/or participate in a range of organisations in order to experience the practical aspects of various modules.We also provide opportunities for personal and career development through a range of workshops and seminars.

English

English is a dynamic and diverse subject, ranging from the bloody revenge dramas of the Renaissance to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters, from the realist novels of the 19th Century to the latest developments on the world wide web. The English degree will encourage your enjoyment of writing and language and, because of the range of options offered will give you the opportunity to build your own preferences into your course of study - whether they be in literature, film, language, media or creative writing. Designed to offer a challenging and enjoyable intellectual experience, it also provides a foundation for a host of different careers, fostering and developing many of the skills necessary for the modern workplace.

Film Studies

Film was the major art form of the 20th Century and will continue to inspire creativity in the 21st. The Film Studies degree will equip you with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to launch yourself into the media industries. You will study the history of the cinema from the earliest experiments in film to the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and you’ll have the rare opportunity to engage in the practical activity of film-making from adaptation and screen-writing to drama and documentary production. Throughout your three years, you will be encouraged to analyse films and engage with theories of cinema, focusing in particular on issues such as censorship, gender, race and the role of self expression. From day one you will also begin to develop practical knowledge of the art of film, working on scripts and storyboards and learning the latest production techniques. Throughout the course you will put into practice what you’ve learnt and you will be encouraged to submit examples of films you have made, scripts you have developed and projects you have completed.

Fine Art

This course is ideal for anyone who enjoys and appreciates art, in particular those who are interested in the areas of painting, ceramics, sculpture and other forms of threedimensional work. It is designed specifically for individuals who are open to new ideas and who wish to explore their own thoughts, beliefs and ideals, and to communicate these through their creative work. Although the nature of your materials will be the over-riding influence on your work, you will be challenged to explore colour, shape, surface, texture, light, space and movement. This is very much a hands-on course and you will produce a body of work which may be exhibited at the University or at a number of venues elsewhere.

Health & Exercise

The importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the individual’s well-being is examined in this degree programme. You will learn how exercise and diet affect the body and impact on the individual’s health, as well as what social and psychological factors encourage or constrain health-related behaviour. You will also learn how to implement and maintain health promotion strategies as well as how to measure and assess an individual’s health and fitness using the latest testing equipment.

Information Systems Management

This degree course will appeal to anyone interested in computing and information systems that are not exclusively technical but extend into the business environment where information is processed and managed. As a graduate of this course you will have gained an in-depth understanding of people, organisations and their information needs, as well as the underlying technologies. The balance of skills gained on this course will be invaluable in a business and administrative context.

Management

This degree will provide you with a thorough understanding of the management issues that drive forward change and economic growth. You will study such topics as leadership, managing people and teams, motivation, change management, as well as the main business functions of marketing, finance and human resources. The course will equip you with the skills needed to apply such theory to the workplace situation.

Management and Sustainability

This course combines the study of management within the context of environmental issues and the development of sustainable business practices. The degree will provide you with a thorough understanding of the management issues that drive forward change and economic growth within a ‘green’ context. You will also study such topics as leadership, managing people and teams, motivation, change management, as well as the main business functions of marketing, finance and human resources. Sustainability and concerns for the environment will underpin each of these topics.

Media Studies

This degree will provide you with the necessary skills and analytical processes needed to start working in the media as well as how to promote and pitch your own ideas. All the modules combine theory and practice in the belief that real understanding has to engage with theoretical and practical processes. The media is always hungry for people with lots of ideas and initiative, who can realise those ideas and make them happen in an entertaining and informative way. This degree will provide an exciting range of modules in a supportive and challenging environment for students which will allow you to develop your personal talents along with strong analytical and research skills, creativity, drive and initiative.

Outdoor Education

The study of Outdoor Education is both wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary. Popular themes traditionally associated with the area are the development of sport specific skills, environmental understanding, positive personal attitudes and values, and enhanced group skills. Outdoor Education has much to offer children and adults in terms of achieving lifelong participation in health-related physical activity, and is seen as a continued growth area in adult leisure pursuits and tourism development. It is recognised as a valuable method of developing a broad range of transferable skills relevant to the workplace.

Physical Education

This course is designed for those students who have identified Physical Education teaching (primary and secondary) or youth sport as a future career route. The current health focus of physical education is strongly represented in the overall content of the degree. Throughout the course students will develop a broad definition of Physical Education as a lifelong process and will be able to relate theory to practice in a practical setting.Work placement in a primary or secondary school is available in the second year, as is the opportunity for an exchange for a semester to a University in the USA during the second year.

Psychology

Psychology is described as the ‘scientific study of people, the mind and behaviour (BPS, 2007) and it is uniquely placed to support many and varied career pathways involving people. The structure of this degree programme has been devised to provide you with insights into a broad range of fields within Psychology and you will become familiar with a range of scientific methods used in exploring human behaviour.Whilst the programme is not yet accredited by the British Psychological Society, its structure will enable successful graduates to seek professional membership through the Society’s graduate entrance scheme. The course provides a broad base for students to gain insights into the mind and human experience - what makes us ‘tick’. The journey begins with an overview of psychology’s passage to becoming a scientific discipline.We shall examine how the brain works, particularly the exciting new developments that technology has enabled scientists to discover. We investigate the human experience from conception to old age as well as the impact of nature and nurture on our well-being and how we construct our social world.

Psychology & Inclusive Studies

As well as the subject of psychology, this course, will incorporate a range of modules linked to issues surrounding ‘social inclusion’ - examining contemporary social issues relating to marginalised groups within society, the challenges faced by policy makers and ordinary citizens in attempting to become a more equal society.

Religious Education

The course combines the academic study of the world's religions with the exploration of educational issues, including the law relating to RE and the National Curriculum, the relationship between education and culture, teaching methodologies, and the idea of spiritual development across the curriculum. The degree is unique as it focuses on the educational issues that relate to teaching RE. The course is ideal for those wishing to gain knowledge in order to teach RE and to reflect on the subject’s place in the primary and secondary curricula of the 21st Century. It therefore provides an excellent foundation for proceeding to a PGCE qualification. Various teaching methods are used eg, lectures, discussion groups, debates, internet-study lessons and seminar presentations. Such innovative methods employ the use of the Blackboard environment, sound-systems, television, video, DVD, and Powerpoint.

Religious Studies

You cannot truly understand our society, history, and world around us without understanding something of religion. This broad ranging course is therefore designed to place religions in their cultural, sociological, historical, and theological contexts. Many subject areas are discussed and analysed, including religious influences on such popular culture as film and pop music, varying religious attitudes towards women, the colourful history of world religions, as well as contemporary efforts of religions to address today’s social issues. Various teaching methods are used within the School, eg, lectures, discussion groups, debates, internet-study lessons and seminar presentations. Such innovative methods employ the use of the Blackboard environment, sound-systems, television, video, DVD, and Powerpoint.

Social Inclusion

The issue of ‘inclusion’ is high on the government’s agenda in the 21st Century. The course is based around issues associated with this increasingly important element of contemporary life, particularly in terms of multi-agency working. The course examines in depth issues related to those with additional needs in society, particularly relating to the legislative framework and how this links to practice. The programme examines issues of inclusion relating to minority groups often marginalised in society for their beliefs or circumstances, for example, asylum seekers, travellers, children of prisoners. Modules will also examine topics relating to disaffection and developing international perspectives relating to inclusion and human rights.

Sports Studies

The course has a strong vocational and academic content. You will study sport from socio-cultural, scientific and practical perspectives. You may choose between the coaching/sports development and socio-cultural pathways, or select modules of interest from both pathways. During your second year, you will be able to undertake a work placement as well as gain a number of coaching awards throughout the course. The dissertation module in the final year offers scope for you to pursue a topic of interest in greater depth.

Theatre Design and Production

BA Theatre Design and Production is now firmly established as a leading programme in the training of designers, scenic artists, stage managers and technicians. Its pyramid structure builds upon a broad foundation of production skills in areas such as costume, stage management, scenic construction and scenic art. The second year concentrates on the application of these skills in a variety of design contexts before students specialise in a particular discipline for an entirely production based final year. The principle of developing graduates skilled in more than one area, with a firm foundation in the methodology of theatre-making is central to the teaching. Work placement modules in the final year have increasingly lead to employment opportunities and graduates are currently working in a range of theatres from small-scale touring companies to largescale opera companies.

Tourism

This is a distinctive programme that will provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to a growing, dynamic global tourism industry. It is a burgeoning industry and its sensitive development will bring significant economic and social benefits to the communities it serves. The study of tourism involves an understanding of the interactions between people and place, and the motivations and influences of tourists from different cultures and societies. The courses offer varied and stimulating academic programmes which examine the nature and structure of tourism in local, national and international contexts. The programmes explore the growing importance of tourism as a global industry, as well as investigating both the positive and negative economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of tourism. The fieldwork element provides an excellent opportunity to study ‘behind the scenes’ at real tourist attractions, and proves an excellent way to exemplify what is studied during lectures.

Tourism Management

The degree programme is designed to equip students with managerial knowledge and skills that will be transferable to the modern tourism context. The tourism industry in the UK is relatively fragmented, with a high concentration of small operators contributing to a multi-billion industry. Such ventures present unique management demands and require professionals who possess skills across a range of managerial disciplines. The course is designed to train individuals in areas identified by the industry as vital, eg information and communications technology (ICT), as well as management skills.

Youth & Community Work

In recent years, three key issues have emerged in the debate about national priorities that affect young people’s education and development: social inclusion, citizenship, and employability. Youth & Community Work is at the heart of working with young people within these three areas. The course offers a professional qualification , underpinned by the core principles and values of youth work. It explores how to facilitate and support young people’s growth, and personal and social development, in a variety of informal settings. It reflects current youth policy and practice in both Wales and England and is relevant to the occupational sector, local and national employers and voluntary sectors. Placements are central to the course in both statutory and voluntary youth settings, and are underpinned by critically assessing issues that impact upon young people’s lives, such as the nature of society and issues of social inclusion, sociology and psychology of youth.

Adventure & Outdoor Education
Under the supervision of our expert tutors, students will spend one day every week engaged in outdoor pursuits, including Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Caving, Mountaineering, Navigation and Scrambling. University-based classes will ensure that they gain the essential theoretical knowledge and understanding that is relevant to the safe and appropriate conduct of a range of outdoor pursuits.

Wales and Welsh History
This is an opportunity to learn about Wales from its Celtic origins to the present day. It will place Wales within the context of the UK, Europe and the wider world. Students will learn about Wales’ unique culture and heritage and will also have the opportunity to learn Welsh if they wish.
